A Guest lecture was held on the topic "IT usage in Banking sector for Competitive Advantage" by Senior Manager, ATM Management, Bank of Ceylon @ the premises of the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, University of Kelaniya on the 28th February 2011.
The Lecture was organized by the Association of Business and Technology.
Students of the Bachelor of Commerce Special Degree in Business Technology at University of Kelaniya formed a Student Association named "Association of Business and Technology". Objective of this association is to improve student knowledge regarding Business Technology and to develop required skills of business technology undergraduates.
Inaugural General Meeting of this association was held on 14th February 2011 from 9.00AM with the participation of students and members of the Lecture panel.

Unlike Bachelor of Commerce degrees almost all the other business management degrees make you specialized in single functional area of business organizations such as General management, Accounting, Marketing, Human resource management, Finance and Information Technology. However, as bachelors degree students you may not known exactly what is your career interest, what kind of job will suit you, and opportunities to switch through careers. Then again if you do not have clearer career path, traditional specialized first degree programs at least limit your starting career options. Even though not all degree holders not doing the post graduate studies in Sri Lanka, post graduate degrees are the best opportunity to specialize in your interested area. If you followed specializes degree then selection of post graduate studies also will influenced. Because generally a person who has hammer, sees everything as nails.
Bachelor of Commerce (Business Technology) degree is a hybrid degree that covers modern business, technology and innovation neurons of business organizations. It will enhance your knowledge in every key aspect of modern business organizations. It will apparently explain the aspects of present traditional business organizations, but it uniquely addresses the emerging technological aspects of business. Hence the student will be able to receive superior knowledge and understanding about present and future business organizations which will be higher than the knowledge and understanding they can get from any other business degree program available in Sri Lanka.
Since the beginning of the industrial revolution and market driven economy, business management has became more and more scientific in nature. Technology is defined as the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. Even though the present understanding of "Business Technology" limited to the information systems, database management, software engineering and usage of information technology in organizations, application of technology in business are not necessarily limited to those high tech functions. More and more scientific and hence technology in nature. Application of science in business function has made the drastic changes in modern business world. Business are running based on scientific management, management by objectives, knowledge management, total quality management, six sigma, balance score card, supply change management, operational research, E-Commerce, E-Business and even E-Accounting. On the other hand, continuous product and process invention and innovation have become not only a source of competitive advantage for the business; it is rapidly becoming basic survival tools in global business world. Hence innovation management, innovation development, intellectual property protection have become integral functions in modern businesses.
Therefore application of scientific and technological products and processes in all aspects of business operations and functions has made the functional cells of business organization technology driven functions. Therefore, future entrepreneurs, managers, consultants, researchers, and educators should understand the technology of modern business functions.
